In the late 19th century, Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923) was the most famous actress in the world. In 1891 she sailed from San Francisco via Honolulu and Auckland to Australia. Her stay in Auckland was brief but memorable.

Waitaramoa – Remuera’s natural heritage

Auckland Council has recently completed a new walkway alongside the Remuera stream at the bottom of Portland Road in what was called Waitaramoa Reserve on the corner of Portland and Shore Roads. The environmental works mean the area is now open for the public to explore – it is an incredible local walk of native plants and walkways.

Barochan at 226 Remuera Road was designed by architect John M. Walker and built in 1916. Extended in 1935 by architect William Gummer,Barochan is a substantial home and one of Remuera’s finest.

Lillian Chrystall (Architects of Remuera) – A very inspiring and influential architect

Lillian Chrystall was an exceptionally gifted award-winning architect. She was accepted into the University of Auckland (UoA) School of Architecture as one of only five women and designed several houses in Remuera.

In Memory of Ngaire Bailey (nee Keys) 1929-2023

Remuera Heritage notes with sadness the passing of Ngaire Bailey in January 2023, aged 93. Ngaire was a member of Remuera Heritage and the granddaughter of Leonard John Keys, the first store owner in Remuera.

In memory of Jeremy Salmond

Remuera Heritage wishes to acknowledge the huge contribution to heritage architecture, restoration and preservation. He was particularly helpful last year in assisting Remuera residents to identify the special character and heritage features of their properties in response to Council’s Plan Change 78 re housing intensification. He has left a huge legacy for New Zealand heritage.

Christmas at the old Post Office

It was wet and windy for our Christmas party but thanks to the hospitality of Sotheby’s Remuera, we were warmly hosted inside the old Remuera Post Office, the historic landmark building in Remuera. There was a guest piper to brighten the day, 21-year-old Finlay John Cameron who is here from Lochaber, Scotland.
