Tour – Two Houses of Kaipara, Saturday 27 February 2021

Ruatuna House, Northland

Totara House, Northland

On Saturday February 27th Heritage Northland will be leading a tour of the Matakohe area of the Kaipara taking in the history and architecture of two significant homes. The tour is titled ‘The Two Houses of the Kaipara’.

Matakohe was settled in the early 1860’s by farmers and labourers from England. It involved a trip up a long inlet of the Kaipara Harbour about as far from anywhere as you could possibly get that even looked like civilization. With no roads, rail or even trails to the area, the only link with the outside world was the sea, and a long haul from the treacherous heads to the little creek a long way up the Kaipara.

Tour Features:

Gathering firstly at the Ruatuna, 441 Tinopai Road, Matakohe at 10 am for a guided tour and enjoying the large grounds – the things that are unique to this very much loved once rural pioneers’ residence.

Following a break for lunch/picnic arrangements, Totara House, 26 Matakohe Wharf Road is hosting us with a guided tour of the house and gardens.

Matakohe Kauri Museum is also in the near locality and if time permits you will be welcome to visit this location. Normal visiting fees apply.

Similarly, if you like to take in more heritage, the Coates Memorial Church and Graveyard is located in the immediate locality. The original Matakohe Church is open daily at the entrance to the Graveyard, where you can view the craftsmanship and simplicity of this tiny precious historic church. The burial site for NZ’s second born Prime Minister Gordon Coates is in this cemetery.

This is a self-drive event, with food options available at the Gumdiggers Café opposite the Kauri Museum in Matakohe, or bring your own picnic. Additional information will be shared regarding the locations we will visit during the introduction stage prior to the Ruatuna tour. Very good location information is available on the NZ Heritage website. However, following the signs to exit SH12 for the Matakohe Kauri Museum will place you in a good position to locate Tinopai Road, Matakohe.

A full day of heritage at a pace to suit all regardless of age or fitness

Cost is $20 per person to cover the tour of houses.
