A paper is being written on the Auckland Young Ladies Orchestra 1888-1899 that is intended to be published as part of a book. Several of the members taught music at the Remuera Ladies College.

Elizabeth Nichol is asking if any of our members have any information about the Auckland Young Ladies Orchestra or these specific women, she would be very pleased to hear about it:

The individuals I know taught at Remuera Ladies College and were members of the orchestra were:

  1. Emily Sutherland nee Reeve. She was conductor of the orchestra and taught music in Auckland up until the 1950s
  2. Amy Stevenson, violinist, who also taught music in Auckland for many years
  3. Millicent Peak, violinist.

Some other prominent members of the orchestra were Stella Alexander (later Davis), Amy Bates, Annie Buckland (later Chalmers), Mary Gorrie, Gertrude, Stella and Winifred Rice, and Winnie Trevithick.

If anyone can help with any information, particularly about their musical education and general involvement in the musical life of Auckland, that would be wonderful.
