Remuera women who signed the Women’s Suffrage Petition of 1893

In 1893, New Zealand became the first country in the world to grant women the right to vote in national elections. Approx. 70 Remuera women signed the Women’s Suffrage Petition.

The suffrage movement was this country’s first truly mass movement – mobilising tens of thousands of New Zealanders with rallies and generating a series of massive petitions.

The petition was signed by over 31,000 New Zealanders. Nearly 24,000 of those signatures have survived on the copy of the petition presented to Parliament. Approx. 70 women gave their address as Remuera. [1] [2]
