On June 14th Boris Bogdanovic of Heritage New Zealand will talk about his career as a Historic Architecture & Cultural Heritage Specialist. He will present Cultural Heritage in States of Conflict: Some Historic Building Projects in the Middle East. If you have family or friends interested in working in heritage conservation, bring them along!
Originally from Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina, Boris grew up in New Zealand and graduated from the University of Auckland’s School of Architecture in 2007 with a B.A.S and B.Arch (Hons. 1st Class). Starting his career in the United Kingdom, Boris’ professional work has focussed on old buildings and cities, conflict zone response and the preservation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage in Central Asia and the Middle East. Boris has presented research at the Universities of Petra and Brighton and lectured at the Universities of Kabul, Kardan, German Jordanian University, Auckland University and Unitec. He is a recipient of several study awards (The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, The Victorian Society, The Attingham Trust et al.- and is a member of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC). From 2017 to 2022, Boris was the International Conservation Architect and Director of Urban Regeneration for the Turquoise Mountain Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation founded by HM King Charles III. The foundation aims to regenerate historic areas and help communities with a rich cultural heritage revive traditional crafts to create jobs, skills, and a renewed sense of pride. Boris’ presentation will be about some of his work from that time. These days, Boris is happy to be living and working back in Auckland, New Zealand.
His presentation is about architectural projects to improve people’s welfare in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, carried out by the Turquoise Mountain Foundation (TMF). A heritage-led not-for-profit organisation founded by HM King Charles III, TMF carries out urban regeneration projects in states of present war or post-conflict. It seeks to repair and conserve historic buildings, revive traditional building techniques, support the livelihoods of local people, and support the more elusive notions of cultural identity and community cohesion. Boris Bogdanovic worked for TMF for five years and will be talking about his projects in the rural town of Umm Qais – ancient Gadara – a site located on Jordan’s northern plateau.
If you have family or friends interested in working in heritage conservation, bring them along to hear about having a career in this important area to preserve and promote heritage.
