Auckland Heritage Festival 2022 – Topography, Taonga and Trailblazers of Tāmaki Makaurau: Landscape and Resources of Ōhinerau
6.30pm, Friday 14 October 2022
The Auckland Heritage Festival is returning 1-16 October 2022, following the cancellation of last year’s festival. The theme is Topography, taonga and trailblazers of Tāmaki Makaurau. Remuera Heritage is putting together a range of speakers to explore the history of Ōhinerau Mt Hobson. The date for the event is Friday 14 October, 6.30pm-8pm at Remuera Library.
Our topic, rescheduled from 2021, will explore how Ōhinerau / Mt Hobson’s slopes have long been an inspiration to Māori and Pākehā. For hundreds of years, the volcanic landscape and rich soils have provided refuge, food and water to the residents of Tāmaki Makaurau and Remuera.
Speakers will explore both the Māori and Pākehā use of the landscape and resources of Ōhinerau. Māra kai gardens for the provision of food have always been a feature for both Māori and Pākehā and continue today with the development of the trailblazing Ngāti Whātua gardens at Ōrākei.
